All About Girls is a monthly group for teenage girls with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or complex needs to enjoy a short break together. The group meets in Carshalton at weekends.

Detailed Local Offer

1. Aims of the service

The group offers peer support for teenage girls with ASD and  / or complex needs. This group are often a minority within the SEND population so this allows them to have time together to enjoy a range of activities including trips out, sports and dance, cooking and life skills, pampering and craft.

The girls generate the ideas for the activities. The group helps to develop social participation, confidence and independence.

2. Location and delivery

The group runs at Cedar Lodge in Carshalton.

3. Who the service is for

The group is for girls aged 13-18 who have ASD or complex needs. There is a limit of 10 girls per session.

4. Accessibility

Yes. Cedar Lodge is fully adapted for wheelchair use, has hoisting in all areas and facilities include a sensory room and a sensory garden. The building is accessible in a wheelchair from a parking space outside.

5. Opening times and availability

The group runs at the weekend at a variable time chosen by the girls depending on the activity. It runs once a month, all year round.

6. How to start using the service

Girls can choose to access the group themselves. They need to contact the Service Manager for Cedar Lodge to be given details of the next available session.

7. Measuring our performance

Girls and families give regular feedback about the group and the activities.

Girls are actively involved in choosing activities and contributing to the running of the group.

8. Quality assurance

All staff at Cedar Lodge receive regular clinical and safeguarding supervision.

All staff work to clinical standards as laid down by their professional organisation,  and also comply with all the clinical policies and procedures set out by the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.

9. How we capture and use information to improve our service

Girls and families give regular feedback about the group and the activities.

Girls are actively involved in choosing activities and contributing to the running of the group.

10. Staffing

Cedar Lodge is a nurse-led unit with a nurse on every shift, supported by a team of healthcare assistants. The ratio of staff to children changes according to the individual needs of the children (e.g. moving and handling requirements)

11. Staff training

All nurses are qualified and registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

All healthcare assistants are required to undergo regular safeguarding training, and annual mandatory training including basic life support. They have annual competency checks to ensure their skills are up to date and safe.

Members of the team have specialist training e.g. tracheostomy care, gastrostomy management, and seizure management.

12. Staff qualifications (minimum)

Nurses must hold a recognised qualification that allows them to be registered with NMC and have demonstrable experience of caring for children.

Healthcare assistants all have NVQ 3 or demonstrable experience of caring for children with special educational needs.

All staff have an annual appraisal and personal development plan.

13. Quality assurance standards and membership of regulatory bodies

Cedar Lodge is registered with the Care Quality Commission as part of the Royal Marsden Foundation Trust.

14. Paying for the service

Families are asked to make a contribution to cover the cost of the activities and materials.
